Blog - October 2020
|
Hello to everyone from Net Impact Chicago (NIC)!
This hot summer has come and gone but cooler weather and changing fall leaves are on their way. Net Impact Chicago has had a busy and exciting past few months with virtual webinar programming discussing racial equity, workplace health and safety, and the future of water with subject matter experts across a variety of backgrounds. For the month of October, we are featuring the Net Impact Central Webinar “Designing for All: Bridging the Digital Divide” on October 8. Join us then! RSVP at: https://netimpactchicago.org/event-3984045.
The Notorious RBG
We are saddened by the passing of U.S. Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who passed away due to complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer. She was a progressive icon that had so much impact on our society. We highlight her work below in our “What we are reading/listening” section. She fought hard for women’s rights, was a defender of liberal principles, and left a large impact on American society.
Justice for Breonna Taylor
Most importantly, we are also disappointed by the results of the recent Breonna Taylor investigation and we stand in solidarity with the Black community and everyone who stands and fights for systemic racism. According to Time, studies have shown that officers involved in a deadly shooting are only charged with a crime a staggering 1.7% of the time. And while recent pressure has been made to reform police departments, there are still biased holes in the American justice system.
Net Impact Chicago wants to make sure our network has the right resources to take action and push for change in our society. At the bottom of this email we will highlight some organizations you can support in these efforts.
VOTE!
Lastly, Election Day is less than 35 days away, please remember to register to vote. You can check your registration status here (https://www.vote.org/). While most states have loosened their vote by mail rules, it will differ by state. Make sure you meet your deadlines by checking here (https://www.rockthevote.org/how-to-vote/nationwide-voting-info/absentee-voting). While every election matters, this upcoming historic election highlights the starkest choice between two very different visions of the nation’s future in over a generation and the shape of power dynamics for decades.
Net Impact Chicago Survey
As we close, we want to be an organization that best serves the community and members within it. We are asking you to fill out a quick 1 minute survey that will allow us to target our programming to best fulfill the needs of the organization. We will use it to better provide targeted programming for 2021 as we have done this year. Please fill it out here: Net Impact 2021 Programming Survey.
Thank you for your time. Please note some of the things we are reading and listening to this month.
