Net Impact Chicago with round logo

July/August 2023 Newsletter:  A Happening Summer and Farm Tour 7/28!

Greetings, Net Impact Chicago (NIC) Community!  Summer 2023 is in full swing in Chicago.  Recent extreme weather events remind us that the sobering effects of Climate Change are here – and need urgent action.  Yet, we also take joy in our natural environment, each other, and many outdoor happenings.  Please see below for some great reads, actions, and events!

RECAP: NIC JUNE WEEKEND SOCIAL

Net Impact Chicago held a Weekend Social on June 3rd!

We kicked off summer with our friends at Chicago Environmentalists. It was a great event to connect with other individuals from the environmental and impact space. The rooftop at Time Out Market was the perfect spot. Conversation ranged from careers to cold beverages to composting. Stay tuned for more NIC and partner events!

COMMUNITY NEWS

Chicago Mayoral Transition Team Report:  What are the implications for the community?

The City of Chicago has a new Mayor, Brandon Johnson.  Recently, his transition team composed of over 350 contributors released a report  “Building Bridges and Growing the Soul of Chicago: A Blueprint for Creating a more Just and Vibrant City for All.”
Whether we live in the city or suburbs; whether we are in the private, public, nonprofit, volunteer, or informal sectors, the issues of co-governance and intersectionality are key themes in achieving a more equitable, prosperous, and safer metropolitan area.  We encourage all Net Impact Chicago community members to think through how they can advance dialogue and action in their respective capacities.  More on this in local media.

FEATURED COMMUNITY EVENTS

Design Museum / Delta Institute panel talk: "Responsibility of Design for the Future" - Tue. July 25, 6 - 8:30 PM

Our built environment is a designed one.  But designed by whom and for whom?
Hosted by our friends at the Design Museum of Chicago and their active Auxiliary Board, this free panel discussion will highlight the ‘future of design’ and the responsibility of Design/Designers to address climate and social issues
Topics:
- Why the future of design should be embedded in a ‘community-led, design-followed’ action
- What and how climate change efforts are borne out of communities – and why this is an important model
- How data is: used in research, as a visual and aural representation of climate impact, and as a way to understand the effect on our surroundings
Panelists will include:
Bill Schleizer of the Delta Institute
Petra Bachmaier of Luftwerk, exhibiting artist
Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO)
Event Cost:  Free!  But RSVP as space is limited.

Youth-Led Urban Farm Tour in Grant Park - Fri. July 28, 4:45 - 5:30 PM

Good food and food growing skills are too important to be left to Industrial/ Big Ag companies alone!
Our friends at the award-winning nonprofit Urban Growers’ Collective are hosting tours throughout July of the urban farm at Grant Park in Downtown Chicago.   Established in 2005, in partnership with the Chicago Park District, this farm is located near Buckingham Fountain. The farm serves as a prime example of local urban agriculture and innovative youth programming. Teens from across the city will share more information about Urban Growers Collective’s work and how they grow an abundance of vegetables, culinary herbs and edible flowers in a beautiful and productive way throughout the summer.
Net Impact Chicago community members plan to attend the Friday July 28, 5 PM tour.  Join us then!  Please RSVP directly to the organizers here, and look for the folks wearing a Net Impact logo button!  If desired, we can then adjourn to a nearby spot for bites and beverages or take in another adjacent free event.
Event Cost: Free!  But please RSVP.  Early arrival is recommended.
Location: Urban Growers Collective, 119 East Congress Pkwy, Chicago, IL 60604 (see map)
Details and RSVP: here
