SPECIAL GUESTS

Joel Brammeier is President and CEO for Alliance for the Great Lakes. He oversees a staff of 20 professionals and more than 11,000 volunteers dedicated to protecting and restoring clean water, educating citizens and youth, and building a sustainable future for the Great Lakes. Joel has developed laws and regulations to prevent invasive species in several Great Lakes states as well as published a first-of-its-kind report describing options for permanent separation of the Great Lakes from the Mississippi River. He also advises the state governors and provincial premiers on regional implementation of the Great Lakes Water Resources Compact. Prior to his work at the Alliance, Joel worked for the American Medical Association. He received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources & Environment and his bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University.

Mary Barton joined the Alliance for the Great Lakes as the organization's Vice President of Development in 2016. She is responsible for leading and executing the organization’s strategic development plan and works closely with the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team to grow the organization’s base of financial support. Mary has more than 25 years of fundraising and management experience in the not-for-profit sector. For 19 years, she served in a series of increasingly responsible roles at Heartland Alliance, a Chicago-based organization working to end poverty, locally, nationally, and around the world. Prior to her work with Heartland Alliance, Mary held development positions at the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, and Horizon Hospice, both in Chicago. She has successfully grown the philanthropic impact of all donor types, but especially with major individual and family donors. Mary received her bachelor’s degree with a major in biology from Denison University.
